A Career Readiness & Employment Program For Black Youth.

Empowerment Through Heritage is a 15-week, paid employment readiness program.

Designed to support Black youth in Edmonton who face barriers to employment. Through skills training,

wrap-around supports, and paid work placements, we help youth build confidence, gain

experience, and secure meaningful employment.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Empowerment Through Heritage is delivered by Black Literacy Code, a Black-led, Black-serving nonprofit organization committed to cultural education and economic empowerment. This program combines culturally grounded training, professional development, and real-world work experience to support youth in successfully entering the labour market. Participants receive structured training, one-on-one support, certifications, mentorship from Black professionals, and paid Quality Employment Opportunities (QEOs) with local employers.

Who This Program Is For

This program is designed for youth who:

  • Identify as Black

  • Are between 18–30 years old

  • Are legally able to work in Canada

  • Are actively seeking employment

  • Face barriers such as limited work experience, systemic discrimination, newcomer

  • status, disability, or lack of access to professional networks.

French-speaking youth and youth with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Program Structure

Each intake runs for 15 weeks and includes:

Weeks 1–6: Employment & Skills Training

Youth participate in in-class training focused on workplace readiness, communication, leadership, financial literacy, digital skills, and career exploration.

Weeks 7–15: Paid Work Placement (QEO)

Participants transition into paid work placements with local employers, working a minimum of 30 hours per week while receiving ongoing mentorship and support.

Program Wrap-Up & Graduation

The intake concludes with evaluations, feedback sessions, and a graduation celebration recognizing participant achievements.
