ABOUT US

Black Literacy Code ( BLC) is an all Black led non-for-profit organization that launched in 2020 to address marginalization, prejudice and systematic racism towards people of colour due to misconceptions about black history and culture. We aim to correct these notions through various forms of art that will help equip our communities with accurate information and education. Black Literacy Code is dedicated to serving and empowering the black community by providing spaces and opportunities for black creators and creatives to showcase and celebrate their diverse and vibrant heritage.

Mission

Our mission is to REACH, EMPOWER, and EQUIP our communities with accurate information about various Black Countries, their History & their Culture.

Vision

We aim to promote inclusion, accurate depiction of people of colour, and to build stronger and well- informed communities.

WHAT WE’RE UP TO

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

  • OUR LIBRARY

At Black Literacy Code ( BLC) we aim to establish Alberta’s first Black Library. Our goal is to supply our community with fictional and non-fictional books written by black authors and individuals that are passionate about black culture & its rich history. The non-fictional books depict black culture, history, and heritage from all African countries, the Caribbean, Afro American, Afro-Latin and Afro-Canadians and Afro Indigenous communities. We hope to launch our library in 2023 with your support. Click the button below to see how you can make this a reality!

  • OUR WORKSHOPS

BLC has had the pleasure of facilitating many workshops and events in our community. We continue to offer various cultural workshops that will showcase various black cultures, our customs, our heritage as well as issues that affect our community. Black Literacy Code aims to provide more cultural workshops, talent showcases, book fairs and other events that will continue to support and empower our community.

We are always looking for volunteers and ambassadors that would love to support us in continuing to offer monthly workshops as well as facilitate them. If you would love to volunteer or pioneer a workshop with us, please complete our volunteer application form below.

  • OUR SOCIALS

In this current day and age, BLC aims to continue to use social media as an educational and informative tool to continue to spread awareness about Black Culture. We host Bi-monthly workshops, talks and book clubs on our social media channels in order to reach as many people as we can and to keep our community engaged. We provide a platform for Authors, Artists, Creatives and Black Business owners to come and showcase their services or craft to our audience. We also host educational segments on our social media around various topics.
